Subotica wine region

Subotica wine region consists of three wine–growing subregions:

  1. Ridjica
  2. Palic
  3. Horgos

 

Spreading of the wine region

Subotica wine region has sandy terrains in Subotica-Horgos sands in the far North of the Republic of Serbia. Based on the new regulations, Subotica wine region covers the territory of the municipalities of Sombor, Subotica and Kanjiza. The area has 38.561,92 hectares, and the Palic wine-growing subregion is the biggest.

Based on the data from 2012, there are 312,18 hectares of vineyards (about 263,22 hectares of the vineyards that produce grapes, i.e. 94,62%) – on the 16,79 hectares are growth table grape varieties and 295,5 hectares wine grape varieties.

The vineyards are located on the plain, at an altitude of 80 to 130 meters.

Soil

Predominant types of soil are Chernozem and Sand.

Grape producers: In this area, 447 households own vineyards. The largest number of vinegrowers is located in the municipality of Subotica.

Grape varieties

Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Chardonnay, Rhine Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Kadarka, Kevedinka, Italian Riesling, Bakator, Ezerjo, Sremska Zelenika, Manzoni, Medenac Beli.

  1. Ridjica wine-growing subregion

Ridjica wine-growing subregion is located in the western part of the region on a sandy terrain along the border of Backi Breg in the West to the beginning of the Telecka plateau to the East. Wine-growing subregion Ridjica consists of three wine-growing oases: Backi Breg, Rastina and Ridjica. It takes up 37,25 hectares of vineyards mostly with wine grape varieties (more than 97%). 173 households are engaged in wine growing

  1. Palic wine-growing subregion

Palic wine-growing subregion is located in the central part of the region on a sandy terrain around Subotica and Palic. It consists of two parts – the Western, located in the area around the Gornji and Donji Tavankut and the Eastern, which is located in the area around Subotica, Palic and Backi Vinogradi. It takes up 196,89 hectares of vineyards mostly with wine grape varieties (95,4 %). 173 households are engaged in wine growing

  1. Horgos wine-growing subregion

Horgos wine-growing subregion is located in the eastern part of the region on a sandy terrain around Horgos. It includes parts of municipalities Horgos, Martonos and Male Pijace. It takes up 78,04 hectares of vineyards mostly with wine grape varieties (91,3 %). 101 households are engaged in wine growing.
